Another feature of freeform roleplaying is chat-room protocols. While some things can be done with the on-board commands, there are certain special items we use as necessary to clarify what is going on in a scene.
To distinguish the difference between IC (In Character) and OOC (Out Of Character) speech, my games use double parentheses.
Example: ((Hi, guys, do you mind if I join?))
All speech that is from one player to another as opposed to one character to another has to be in OOC brackets.
Occasionally, special circumstances will require the use of other protocols. The two most common ones are action brackets, which look like this: :: :: or * *, and telepathy brackets, which look like this: ~~ ~~.
Action brackets are used when a character is doing an action rather than speaking. While the / me command will render actions, occasionally a player will wish to speak, and then do something in the same post. That's where these come in handy.
Example: Jason: Look at this! Where did this come from? ::Jason picks up the arrow.::
Telepathy brackets are used when characters that have that ability are speaking mind-to-mind.
Example: ~~Why, yes, I am reading your mind. That's what telepaths do, my very dear.~~
